Airdrie human being charged with murdering his mother

Facebook posts identify Thorpe as Lowen's son, though RCMP wouldn't confirm their relationship

Mounties have charged an Airdrie man with 2nd-degree murder in the slaying of his mother.

Alexander James Thorpe, 20, has been charged in the expiry of Melanie Lowen, 48, whose body was found in a residence in the city north of Calgary during a well-being check last Thursday.

Facebook posts identify Thorpe as Lowen'south son, though RCMP wouldn't confirm their relationship.

"They were known to each other," said Cpl. Tammy Keibel.

Earlier Lowen's body was discovered, a man was found injured at a business in northeast Airdrie at around 8 a.m. Th.

He was taken to hospital with police force saying he'd remain there "for an extended period."

An autopsy performed on Friday indicated the expiry was a homicide and Thorpe — who was the person transported to hospital — was charged by the RCMP major crimes unit.

Photos on Lowen's Facebook page announced to evidence the mother and son during happier times, with Lowen posing with Thorpe after he was honoured for his Grade 12 mathematics achievements at Airdrie's George McDougall high school in 2019.

Another shows them grinning together at Lake Louise in the summer of 2018.

In an article published past Discover Airdrie in May 2019, Thorpe describes himself equally an gorging community volunteer and soccer thespian with a desire to travel and pursue a business or engineering instruction.

Following a judicial hearing in Calgary Provincial Court last week, Thorpe was remanded in custody and his instance was to be heard in court on Mon.
